The Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is issued by a Canadian Immigration Visa Office outside of Canada that certifies that the bearer has met the criteria for visitor entry to Canada. TRVs may be used for single or multiple entries, and tourists may be allowed to stay for six months. International students and temporary foreign employees are accepted for different lengths of time, as decided on a case-by-case basis. The applicant may apply for an extension from within Canada.

Unless they are from a visa-exempt country, people who want to come to Canada for a temporary purpose, such as temporary foreign workers, tourists, and international students, must apply for and be granted a TRV.

It's important to remember that just because tourists have a valid TRV doesn't guarantee they will be let in. All tourists must show that their visit to Canada is for a transitory reason at the Port of Entry. Officers at the Port of Entry will refuse entry to anybody who does not plan to depart Canada after their visitor status expires.
